Attain and Maintain A Healthy, Attractive Weight

Here are the tools to help you reach and maintain a healthy weight for life and to get through the high-calorie holidays.  Severe calorie-restricted diets and punitive exercise programs destroy your health and self-confidence and can reduce your metabolism by up to 30 percent. No wonder over half of adult women are overweight! Instead of chasing unrealistic and impossible results, learn how to nurture yourself and improve your health and metabolism with exercise and nutrition.

The exercise plan:
• Is appropriate for women of any age and fitness level
• Includes strength training and aerobic routines designed to promote metabolic healing
• Includes hands-on strength training instruction
Increases lean body mass and metabolic healing
• Helps your body burn more calories even when at rest
• Helps you develop self-confidence and motivation
• Can be done in as little as two hours a week

The nutrition plan:
Supports healthy weight control for life
• Helps you create an individualized plan that fits your goals and time constraints
• Nurtures your body to help you avoid emotional eating
• Teaches you how to satisfy your hunger while building health and losing weight
• Teaches you how to eat for health and enjoyment without spending your life in the kitchen

Strength, Bones, and Beauty:
Improve Your Bone Health, Improve Your Appearance

This class helps women of all ages and fitness levels develop strong bones for life. Strong bones are essential to an attractive and healthy body, but poor bone health is common.  While women at midlife and older are concerned about the common effects of lost bone strength, postural collapse from compression fractures is only part of the problem. Fragile bones can result in lost mobility and physical dependence.  And poor bone health has become a problem for young women, too, because of inadequate nutrition, severe dieting, too little exercise, genetic factors, or a history of smoking.

The Strength, Bones, and Beauty program simultaneously improves your bone health, general health, appearance, and self-confidence.  You'll learn about the primary importance of exercise for lowering fracture risk for women of all bone densities, whether or not they are taking medication to lower bone loss.  You'll also learn more about bone health testing and recent research about nutrition and bone health.

Elaine's bone health program was published in February 2006 in the Strength and Conditioning Journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  Her article "Designing Exercise Programs to Lower Fracture Risk in Mature Women" reviews recent research on using exercise to lower fracture risk and designs an exercise program based on this research.

This class helps you:
• Understand and lower risk factors for bone fractures
• Learn a bone-strengthening resistance training program appropriate and safe for your fitness level
• Master your strength training routine with hands-on instruction
Improve bone health with bone-loading aerobic exercise
Gain confidence in your body's strength and capacities
Improve balance and posture to prevent falls
• Use nutrition and nutritional supplements to improve your bone health
• Understand bone health testing
