Nutrition Information

As a nutrition counselor, I need to make sure clients know some basic dietary information.  The following articles provide guidelines that can be used by most everyone.

Using Nutrition to Build Health: General information to help you make your whole diet healthy

Keeping Healthy With Fats and Oils:  This article discusses practical ways to improve your diet based on the latest research information about healthful fats and oils.  Certain kinds of oils are essential for our good health.  This article was published in Master Trainer, Oct. 2003.  An earlier version appeared at Cyberpump.com.

Carbohydrates: Friends or Foes?: Many people are confused about  carbohydrates  and how they change blood sugar levels (glycemic index and glycemic load).  Do carbs make us gain or lose weight?  Should they be avoided or embraced?  How do we distinguish healthy from unhealthy carbohydrates?  This article offers much beyond the outdated "simple and complex carbohydrate" classification and gives practical advice for including quality carbohydrates in your diet.  This article was published in Master Trainer, Aug. 2003.  An earlier version appeared at Cyberpump.com.

Vegetables and Fruits:  We all know that fruits and vegetables are healthy, but this article helps you find efficient ways to improve the quantity and quality of plant foods in your diet.   This article has been published in Master Trainer, Feb. 2004.  An earlier version appeared at Cyberpump.com.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Weight: Protein, Caffeine, Sugar, and Fluids:  This article covers healthy fluid and protein intake.  It also discusses eating patterns that protect your blood sugar level and the problems of caffeine and sugar over-consumption.  If you're not an athlete, you may not need as much water and protein as I recommend here, but experiment and let your body's reaction be your guide.   This article was published in Master Trainer, Apr. 2004.  An earlier version appeared at Cyberpump.com.

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements: Which Ones Work?  This article discusses nutritional supplements, including my recommendations and an overview of scientific research on this topic.  It was published in Master Trainer, Dec. 2003.  An earlier version appeared at Cyberpump.com.

Recent Findings About Vitamin D and Our Health: This article explores recent research about our Vitamin D needs.  We need much more than has been recommended and a simple blood test will give you information about your vitamin D status--if you take the correct test.  This information will be an eye opener for those with low bone density, unexplained pain, and many other diseases.  This article was published in Master Trainer, June, 2004.

Taking Your Healthy Diet On the Road: This article appeared in Master Trainer, December 2001 and discusses keeping a healthy diet while traveling.  It's written for strength trainers, but the advice works for anyone who wants to eat well.
